Build your camera presence
How to look and sound better on camera
Having the best equipment and the best script will not automatically make a good video. Far from that, we still need to have a strong camera presence, in order to produce high quality videos.
Camera presence is basically knowing how to behave and talk on camera. Let’s see some tips to build a great camera presence:
-
Keep a good posture. Maintain a good posture along the whole video, this will help you to look and feel more confident;
-
Instead of reading the script, learn the topic. Whenever you read something off a script, it will not sound natural. It’s much better to learn and understand what you’re going to say, and letting it flow naturally. This will give a much more personal feeling to your video;
-
Get excited! Before recording your videos, make sure to get excited about the topic, and let it be shown on camera, smile and let your audience know that you’re happy about it. Of course, always have in mind the topic, and adapt the emotion and feeling you want to show accordingly;
-
Make use of body language: move your arms, your hands, your head, and let your body talk the subject along with your voice. Just be careful not to over do it, so it doesn’t look forced;
-
Look directly into the camera lens. It’s easy to let our eyes get distracted, but make sure to look at the lens of your camera, so the viewer feels that you’re talking with him/her;
-
Make good use of your voice. Don’t need to be shy, talk just as you would do with a friend, and project your voice out of your mouth a bit higher than you normally do, but be careful not to feel like you’re screaming. Don’t let it become monotonous, use emphasis on the main ideas, change the pace here and there, and show emotions when talking;
-
Practice. Practice. And Practice. Do some test recordings first, to get in the mood and find areas where you might have some issues with the script. Practice on camera, in front of a mirror, or even ask a friend to help you out if needed. Practicing is the key to feel and look confident on camera.
