Hooks, CTAs, Scroll-stopping techniques

Create content that stands out and make people stop scrolling!

In the this article, we are going to understand a bit more about the basic structure of a UGC video and what are some of the elements that composes this kind of content.

🪝 Hooks

Hooks are basically a phrase, a promise or an interesting visual used in the first 2-3 seconds of a video, in order to grab the viewer's attention, and make them stop scrolling. It’s an old marketing technique that now became popular in Social Media as well.

When using a hook, you should think of the kind of person you want to attract, and make the hook relatable for them. This is heavily related to the product you’re showcasing on the video, so think of who is the ideal consumer of said product, and start your video saying and/or showing something that would be interesting for them, and would grab their attention.

Oftentimes the brand will provide a few hooks ideas for you to use in the video, and these can be found in the campaign brief.

Here are some examples of great uses of Hooks:

🔗CTAs

Call-To-Action, or CTA, is a common technique used to influence people into taking some sort of action. Usually it’s used at the end of a video or content, in an imperial language, which calls the viewer into doing something. Some common examples are: “Hit like and subscribe!”, “Click on the link!”, “Hit Follow”.

📱Scroll-stopping techniques

Along with a good hook, you can also implement a few more scroll-stopping element into the first seconds of your video, to have a higher chance of grabbing the audience’s attention.

A good way to capture the scroll, is to start your video in a different or unexpected way, making it stand out from others. It’s common to see videos that start with the creator dropping the product, showing a small clip in reverse, placing the product in a nice / different scenario, and similar things. All these are meant to “capture the scroll”, and make the first 2-3 seconds of the video stand out.

Be creative and think of different and entertaining ways you could start your videos, and make sure to combine these with a good hook, to maximize the chances of capturing the scroll.

In short: using a good Hook in the beginning of your video will grab people's attention. And adding a CTA at the end of it, will help to increase the conversions of your video. But to keep people interested throughout your video, you can use some Storytelling in your script. Here's an article on how to do that.
